2017 Community Investment Grant Recipients


In total, we received 90 amazing submissions from 70 applicants for the Community Investment Grant Program, between March 14 - 28, 2017. Representatives from Volta Lab, Halifax International Airport Authority, Halifax Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia, Venor, My Halifax Experience and Nova Scotia Business Inc. all participated as members of CUA’s Selection Committee.

Social Enterprise

Adsum PeerWorksExpansion

Adsum For Women and Children offers services, programs, emergency shelter, as well as short and long term housing homeless or at-risk women, children, youth and transgender individuals.

The PeerWorks project offers Adsum residents and service users a work training opportunity in property management to gain experience and improve their skills, well-being and confidence, which will help them financially, socially and mentally.

The Social Enterprise Grant will allow Adsum to continue to expand the number of participants and explore the potential to increase the maximum income for clients, which is currently set at $150 per month.

New Canadian Venture

Ethno-Cultural Farm Project

The African Community Investment Cooperative of Canada, (ACICC), began developing the Ethno-Cultural Farm Project in 2015.

The project seeks to bring new Canadians together to engage their skills productively to produce their own foods. The Ethno-Cultural Farm Project will also be offering employment opportunities to new Canadians who do not speak English as their first language.

The project will use the New Canadian Venture Grant to rebuild and expand their greenhouse.

Fairview Mobile Food Market

The Fairview Mobile Food Market is a bi-weekly not-for-profit pop-up market that sells fresh, affordable produce and improves engagement between members of the community.

The project ensures continued access to healthy, affordable food for seniors and those who may experience food insecurity. They also organize community activities, including art activities, pop-up libraries and workshops. This season, the market is operating from a seniors’ residence in the community.

The Community & Non-Profit Grant will help the Mobile Food Market to be able to continue offering pop-up markets as well as growing the initiative.

Youth

“No Time For That” Tour

The “No Time For That” tour is an anti-bullying presentation produced by the registered Canadian charity – the No Time for That Anti-Bullying Society. The founder, Elsie Morden, visits schools to discuss mental illness, self-love and positivity.

The tour aims to help, inspire and empower youth by using personal stories and music. By tackling the stigma surrounding mental illness, they encourage students to follow their dreams, be proud of who they are and treat themselves and others with kindness and respect.  

The Youth Grant will allow Elsie to continue visiting schools, to expand and grow the tour.

Small Business

Halifax Paper Hearts

Halifax Paper Hearts is a graphic design studio that heart-makes cards and prints with love, care and salty air on the East Coast of Canada.

Through their workshops, blog posts, speaking engagements and community work, they have helped inspire and mentor dozens of entrepreneurs and students and have supported over 15 local charities.

Through the Local Business Grant, Halifax Paper Hearts will be purchasing camera equipment to improve the quality of content shared online and become more effective story tellers, to help impact more young entrepreneurs in Nova Scotia.

HRM Community Organic Herb Gardens

Samara Naturals offers handcrafted, locally sourced, organic, herbal, beauty creams and bath products and they are establishing HRM Community Organic Herb Gardens.

The gardens will provide access to nutritionally rich foods that may be unavailable to low-income families and individuals, add a beautiful green space to an otherwise urban environment and bring people together. Samara Naturals will also be offering workshops to help people make the most of their herbs.

With the Local Business Grant, Samara Naturals will be purchasing equipment and seeds, construction materials for greenhouses and construction labour.
