Talk Money, Build Confidence

For some of us, budgeting is one of the first financial lessons we learn. Whether it comes from a parent, teacher or advisor, the message is simple: understand where your money comes from and where it is going. In today’s digital world, however, convenience can often come with monthly subscription fees, and these recurring expenses can find their way into even the most carefully planned budget.  Having a plan for your money is one of the first steps toward turning financial goals into reality.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) identified that budgeting is a key behaviour for building financial resilience. Their research shared that Canadians who budget consistently, and even those who budget intermittently, experience meaningful financial benefits. These individuals reported greater confidence in debt management, higher savings and lower stress related to credit purchases.

At CUA, we believe financial literacy is one of the most powerful tools for building confidence and making informed financial decisions. It empowers people to take control of their financial journey. Whether you’re managing day-to-day expenses, planning for a milestone or preparing for the unexpected, a stronger understanding of your finances can help make progress toward your goals.

November is Financial Literacy month (FLM), and we’re encouraging individuals, businesses and organizations to talk about finances with their friends and family. The theme of this year’s FLM is “Talk Money”, which encourages people to start conversations about personal finances. While money is not always an easy topic to discuss, these conversations can provide insights you may not have previously considered.

To help you jumpstart a conversation with your family, friends or financial advisor, we have several CUAdvice articles that will get you thinking: 20 Questions for Financial Conversations and 20 Questions for Student Finances. No matter where you are in your personal finance journey, talking about money is a great way to learn and discover new tips for achieving your financial goals. The biggest takeaway I can share is that no personal finance journey is the same – they are unique to everyone’s specific goals and priorities.

Before I wrap up, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in our annual Member Appreciation Day on November 5th. It’s always one of my favourite days of the year, as all of us at CUA get to celebrate each one of you! We had some incredible prizes to give away, including $1,000 cash and a $1,000 Air Canada gift card, while our Commercial Team and Branch Managers delivered treats to some of our business members. Congratulations to all of the winners of the prize draws. And while the official celebration is only one day, I hope that you feel valued year-round, because U are truly the centre of CUA.

As always, if you would like more information about financial literacy or any of our banking products, please reach out to us any time at 902.492.6500, book an appointment online or email us at info@cua.com.
