Investing in Nova Scotia's Next Generation
As we move into August, I hope you have had the chance to enjoy the beautiful weather and take in the breathtaking scenery our Province has to offer. It’s the final few weeks of the summer break, before students begin getting ready for new routines and beginning or completing the next phase of their career trajectory.
This April, Build Force Canada released a report about Nova Scotia’s Construction Industry and the need for more tradespeople in the Province. Nova Scotia faces >a potential hiring requirement of 15,000 workers by 2034, and anticipate demands for tradespeople will increase. The Industry Report showed that approximately 23% of trade workers will be retiring by 2034. In an effort to recruit, train and retain more students, the Provincial Government announced funding in 2024 for more training seats in high-demand trades. This also included a waiver of Trade Qualifier fees in construction trades until 2026, which will save more than $700 for each individual with skills and work experience who choose to take the exam and meet the standards set for a certified tradesperson.
To support this key priority, CUA launched a new financing program for trade students. The Skilled Trades Banking Program is available for all Nova Scotian students enrolled in programs that are part of NSCC’s School of Trades and Transportation. It includes financing and banking options for students just beginning their programs as well as upcoming or recent graduates who may be interested in starting their own trades business.
And in the final piece of education-related news, I’m delighted to share that our $10K in a Day Program is returning again this year! We’ll be giving away $10,000 to help students pay for their tuition. Our online ballot
