Meet Abdullah Awais

As a Financial Advisor (FA) at our Pleasant Street Branch. He tells us about his transition from co-op student to FA, explains why he loves the TFSA and describes why consistent actions make the biggest difference in your financial health, regardless of your life stage.

1) Where did you grow up? If you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan, where I lived until I was 18. In 2021, I relocated to Halifax to pursue my education at Saint Mary’s University (SMU), drawn by its vibrant community and academic excellence.

2) Can you highlight your education background and professional experience?

I am a recent graduate from Saint Mary's University, where I earned a double major in Finance and Economics. Prior to joining CUA, I gained valuable customer service experience in Halifax's hospitality industry, which taught me the importance of creating exceptional experiences for others.

My journey with CUA began in 2024 as a co-op student—an opportunity that has proven to be incredibly rewarding. While completing my studies, I transitioned into a part-time Financial Services Representative role, deepening my understanding of our members' needs and CUA’s mission. Upon graduating, I was excited to step into my current position as a Financial Advisor, where I now have the privilege of helping our members achieve their financial goals and build secure futures.

3) What drew you to banking?

My passion for finance and economics has always guided my career aspirations toward the financial industry. At CUA, I’ve witnessed firsthand the dedication of my colleagues to empower individuals on their journey to financial independence. The satisfaction I see on our members' faces when we assist them with their banking needs solidifies my commitment to this field.

4) What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

My typical workday as a Financial Advisor involves meeting with members to understand their unique financial situations and goals. I provide personalized advice on investment strategies, retirement planning, lending solutions, and wealth management to help them build secure financial futures. Each day brings meaningful conversations where I have the opportunity to make a real difference in our members' lives. At the end of the day, I review client files, prepare for upcoming appointments, and often share a few laughs with my colleagues over coffee; those moments of connection keep the energy high and remind me why I love working at CUA.

5) What is the best part of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is the engaging conversations with our members. The smiles and gratitude they show are my greatest motivators. I also love the people I work with—I look forward to work because of my amazing colleagues who do not fail to make me laugh or help me when I am in need.

6) What is the most valuable thing you've learned since you started working at CUA?

The most valuable thing I’ve learned working at CUA is that everything is fixable. Embracing a solution-oriented mindset has been invaluable, allowing me to focus on resolving challenges rather than stressing over mistakes. This approach is crucial for maintaining mental well-being and a positive outlook.

7) What do you think is a common banking myth people believe?

One myth I hear all the time is that you need to be rich to work with a Financial Advisor. Many people think they need to have a ton of money saved up before it even makes sense to sit down and talk about their finances. But honestly? That couldn't be further from the truth. Whether you're just starting out in your career, trying to figure out how to save for a house, or thinking about retirement down the road—everyone's financial situation is different, and everyone can benefit from having a plan. I think getting started early and building good habits is what really sets you up for success, no matter where your savings are currently.

8) What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

My best piece of financial advice is to spend, save, and invest wisely—but what that looks like is different for everyone. Spending wisely means being intentional with your money. Saving builds your safety net, so start an emergency fund even if it's small. And investing is how your money works for you.

What I've learned at CUA is that small, consistent actions make the biggest difference. Whether it's automatic transfers, choosing the right investment strategy, or simply tracking your spending—it all adds up. The key is to start wherever you are now and build from there.

9) What is your favourite CUA product and why?

My favourite CUA product has to be the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). It's one of the most versatile financial tools available to Canadians. What makes it so powerful is the flexibility; you can use it for short-term goals like saving for a vacation or down payment, or for long-term wealth building, and any growth is completely tax-free.

I love recommending TFSAs because they work for almost everyone, regardless of where you are financially. Plus, you can withdraw funds without penalty when life happens, which makes it practical and adaptable. It's a product that truly grows with you.

10) Outside of your professional life, what is your favorite activity or hobby?

When I’m not at work, you’ll likely find me at the gym lifting weights or enjoying a game of soccer with friends on a sunny day.

11) What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

My favorite dish to cook is fettuccine chicken alfredo. However, my top culinary delight is my mom's biryani—its rich flavours are unparalleled (the secret ingredient? A mother’s love!).
