Meet David Tello Isla

As a Financial Services Representative at our Spryfield Branch, David tells us about growing up in Peru, his love of fitness and volunteering and what brought him back to banking after a career change to the travel industry.

1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I grew up in Iquitos, Peru. After meeting my husband in Barcelona five years ago, we chose to live in Peru for two years until moving to Canada during COVID, as he was born and raised in Halifax.

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I studied International Business and Tourism at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon, in Peru. One of my first jobs was as an accounting assistant for an airline, then I worked for a bank for five years. At the time, I decided that an office job was not for me, so I became a flight attendant. I was a flight attendant for eight years, until I met my husband on one of my trips.

3. What drew you to banking?

I returned to banking for the work-life balance. A Monday to Friday schedule allows me to grow professionally and spend more time with my family.

4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

I recently joined CUA as a Financial Services Representative, and I like this role. I am enjoying the chance to re-learn the industry and gain new experiences with banking in another country.

5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

A regular day for me includes getting to know all of our members on a personal level and helping them with their individual banking needs.

6. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is dealing with our members—I’m a people person and I like to help others. With each interaction I learn more, which is helping me to develop the right tools to best assist our members with their daily banking needs.

7. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

The most valuable thing I’ve learned so far is the importance of working as a team player. Since I’ve been here, everyone has been willing to help and guide me through any situation.

8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

A piece of financial advice that I believe is important is ensuring clear communication with your financial advisor. Transparency is important when trying to achieve your financial goals and it can allow you to find the best solution to meet your needs.

9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I love going to the gym, I believe it helps me stay fit both mentally and physically.

10. Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc.) and if so, what?

If I have the opportunity to help the community, I do it. For example, I was one of the volunteer staff for COVID testing during the pandemic.

11. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

My husband and I usually meal prep for the week. We love cooking and eating at home for the most part. If I had to pick a favourite food, pasta would be my choice.
