Doe is the Director of Commercial Services. She has been with CUA since 2020 and works closely with new and established businesses. She tells us about her passion for financial literacy and love of literature, good music and the food scene in Nova Scotia.

1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I grew up in the beautiful Annapolis Valley (Halls Harbour, specifically!). I now live in Ellershouse, which I love because it’s right between Halifax and the Valley. It really feels like the best of both worlds, with two amazing communities that each have so much to offer.

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I studied Financial Services at NSCC, where I graduated as valedictorian, and I also had the opportunity to study International Business at Hanze University in the Netherlands. I achieved my PFP® (Personal Financial Planner) designation through the Canadian Securities Institute.

Before joining CUA, I worked as a Senior Personal Advisor at one of Canada’s largest banks. Today, I’m the Director of Commercial Services at CUA, where I’ve really enjoyed supporting local entrepreneurs and real estate companies as they work toward their goals. One of the things I’m most proud of is the way we’re able to think creatively and tailor solutions to meet each member’s unique needs.

3. What drew you to banking?

For me, it really comes down to the need for better financial education. This is something that impacts people at every stage of life. I’ve been on the other side of the desk myself, wanting to improve my financial situation but not always knowing where to start or what questions to ask.

Money can be a sensitive topic, and it often involves sharing your goals, worries and upcoming plans. That takes trust. I try to approach every conversation in a down-to-earth, judgment-free way, with a genuine focus on helping people feel informed, confident, and supported as they work toward their goals.

4. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

No two days are exactly the same, but I spend a lot of my time connecting with my team and brainstorming financing solutions for entrepreneurs and real estate investors. It’s a very collaborative environment, which I really enjoy.

A big part of the role also involves staying on top of what’s happening in the local market and continuously learning about new programs and resources available to support business owners.

5. What do you think is a common banking myth people believe?

A common myth is that you need to carry a balance on your credit card to build your credit score, or that improving your score takes a long time.

In reality, using a credit card responsibly (like paying it off in full each month) is one of the best and quickest ways to build credit, all while avoiding interest. I also hear some people say they avoid credit cards altogether, but when used properly, they can be a really helpful financial tool. It just takes a bit of discipline to make sure you’re not spending more than you can afford.

6. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

Know where your money is going. It sounds simple, but it’s something many people struggle with. Without a clear understanding of what’s coming in and what’s going out, it’s easy to fall into the habit of living paycheck to paycheck or spending more than you realize.

7. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I have two amazing kids and two very happy dogs. We love getting out for local adventures, whether that’s dodging laser beams at Activate in Dartmouth or browsing for hidden gems at Books Galore in Coldbrook. In the past few years, I’ve also discovered Candlelight string quartet concerts around Halifax, and there’s just something about that music that really speaks to me. I highly recommend checking one out if you haven’t before.

8. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

At home, one of our favourite go-to meals is breakfast for supper. Pancakes, sausages, local fruit, eggs benedict, omelettes, etc. I don’t always have time to enjoy a proper breakfast during the week, so making it for dinner feels like the next best thing.
