Meet Joe

Joe manages our South Park Street branch. He shares how he developed an interest in banking, what his  favorite hobbies are in the city and some financial tips he thinks everyone should follow.

1. Where did you grow up, and what brought you to Halifax?
I moved to Halifax for University in 2013, going to Dalhousie for a double major in Economics and German. After graduation, I stayed because Halifax has lots of opportunities, combined with friendly people. It’s a great place to live. I appreciate that Halifax is a small town, and I really like the coastline, especially in the summer.

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?
I worked at various banks during University. I started as a part-time teller and then after graduating, became a financial advisor, as I really enjoyed the banking industry. I joined CUA in 2023 as the South Park Street Branch Manager.

3. What drew you to banking?
I worked at various banks during University. I started as a part-time teller and then after graduating, became a financial advisor, as I really enjoyed the banking industry. I joined CUA in 2023 as the South Park Street Branch Manager.

4. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
A regular workday means arriving at the branch and helping our Financial Service Representatives set up. I look through emails and make sure I follow up with all clients. I also do a lot of training, coaching and supporting my team with any questions or client issues that come up by helping them to find solutions.

5. What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is helping clients each day to meet their financial needs and goals.

6. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
One of the most important things I’ve learned is how being a strong and positive team leader or manager can help employees be the most successful. Leading by example and supporting staff is critical.

7. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Try to avoid “bad debt” (such as credit card balances or payday loans) and go for “good debt” when you need to. Good debts typically have lower interest rates and may help you increase your net worth or enhance your life. These are things like a mortgage to purchase a home or a student loan for education that will improve your career prospects.

8. What is your favourite CUA product and why?
The No Down Payment mortgage – it is unique, and it helps people achieve their housing dreams without saving for many years. Purchasing their home is a huge milestone in clients’ lives.

9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
I like to spend time with my family, hiking and playing basketball with friends. I like traveling as well, I always enjoy trips and finding new places to experience.

10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
I am a meat lover, so I’ll enjoy any dishes with meat.
