1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I grew up in Dartmouth, but after getting into banking I worked in a few different provinces, including Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia. I moved back to Nova Scotia in 2021.
2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?
I went to NSCC for Information Systems and Technology. My first banking experience was at a contact centre, and I have worked in all roles from teller to branch manager since then. In one previous role, I coached branch managers on providing more support for business members. I have experience supporting many business types in various industries, including lumber, dentistry, medicine, construction, law, campgrounds and I have even facilitated a loan for a food truck! I was one of the first virtual business advisors with a previous employer, leading a territory across Western Canada and supporting several branches and individuals in those provinces.
3. What drew you to banking?
In my NSCC courses, there were a lot of business components which I really enjoyed, and they are what led me to banking. I enjoy being creative and helping people to see what unique solutions we have to support their needs.
4. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
I arrive and get prepared for the day, then review any morning meetings I have and follow that with a meeting with my team. During the meeting, we talk about what is going well and what opportunities we have. We set commitments for what we anticipate for the day and what we want to achieve.
5. What is the best part of your job?
I enjoy coaching my team and speaking with members. I am a people person and enjoy helping individuals find financial success. It is so motivating to see people grow into their potential and reach their financial goals.
6. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
This is overall advice I would give to anyone in the banking industry; take things as they come – things change, be flexible, and adapt to the new. Adaptability is key.
7. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Pay yourself first, it is very important. From the time you begin your career to retirement, it’s important to put a bit of money away for the future and potential emergency situations. If you pay yourself first, you will always have cash set aside, which is one less thing to worry about when you hit an unexpected challenge.
8. What is your favourite CUA product and why?
My favourite CUA product is the TFSA. You can use it for so many things, including an emergency savings account or a child’s education fund. You can also use it as a top-up for an RRSP contribution. It is so versatile, and you can really make it work for you in the way you need.
9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
When I am not at work, I really enjoy watching true crime tv shows and my husband and I regularly go camping throughout the Maritimes.
10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
I love food, and I would have to say that I make a mean lasagna. My friends and family have loved it, and I have been told they haven’t had anything like it.
