1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I grew up in Gujarat, India, a region known for its rich culture, strong entrepreneurial spirit and close-knit communities. In 2019, I made the exciting decision to relocate to Halifax. What drew me here was the city’s unique coastal charm and ocean views. Halifax offers the perfect balance of professional opportunity and quality of life.
2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?
I hold a bachelor’s degree in science and master’s degree in business administration, which provided a strong foundation in finance and leadership. I began my career as a Marketing Executive and progressed into a management role, gaining valuable experience in analysis and team leadership. After moving to Canada in 2019, I transitioned into the banking industry, where I continue to apply my diverse experience in my role as a Manager, Credit Adjudication.
3. What drew you to banking?
From the beginning of my career, I have been closely involved with lending products and financial services, which sparked my interest in the banking sector. Over time, I came to appreciate how financial literacy and responsible lending play a vital role in building stronger individuals, businesses, and communities. The opportunity to make a meaningful impact, combined with the growth and learning opportunities within the industry, ultimately drew me to pursue a career in banking.
4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?
I joined CUA in 2021 as a Financial Advisor, where I focused on supporting members with their lending and financial needs. I then moved to the role of Branch Manager, leading a team and overseeing branch operations. Currently, I serve as Manager, Credit Adjudication, where I am responsible for assessing credit applications and supporting sound lending decisions.
5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
As Manager of Credit Adjudication, no two days are the same, but a typical workday involves a balance of analysis, decision-making, and collaboration. I begin by reviewing credit applications, assessing risk and ensuring all lending decisions comply with our policies and regulatory standards. A large part of my day involves working closely with team members and branch managers, providing guidance on complex cases. In addition, I oversee CUA’s Dealer Finance program, focusing on growing the business while also adjudicating dealer finance applications to support both our members and dealer partners.
6. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
Since taking on my role at CUA, the most valuable lesson I have learned is the importance of balancing thorough risk assessment with understanding each member’s unique financial needs making sound credit decisions while supporting members in achieving their goals.
7. What do you think is a common banking myth people believe?
A common banking myth is that credit decisions are purely numbers-based and impersonal. Banking is actually very people focused. At CUA, our goal is to understand each member’s unique situation and provide guidance and solutions that help them achieve their financial goals.
8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
One piece of financial advice I always share is to live within your means and prioritize saving. Building a habit of budgeting, managing debt responsibly, and setting aside funds for emergencies creates a strong foundation for long-term financial security and peace of mind.
9. What is your favourite CUA product and why?
One of the CUA products I most appreciate is the No Down Payment Mortgage because it makes home ownership more accessible for many people who may not yet have the full down payment saved. This helps members get into their home sooner, reduces the upfront financial barrier, and provides added flexibility as they transition into home ownership, all while still receiving the support and guidance of CUA’s team throughout the process.
10. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
Outside of work, I love spending quality time with my wife. We enjoy hiking, exploring new restaurants and going on long drives. I also like staying informed about current real estate trends and attending local events in the city. Cooking is one of my favourite activities, and I enjoy experimenting with a variety of cuisines, including Indian, Chinese and Thai.
11. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
My favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant is Paneer Biryani. I love its rich, aromatic flavors and the perfect balance of spices with tender paneer and fragrant basmati rice. It’s a dish that’s both comforting and satisfying.
