Meet Carol Pettipas

Financial Services Representative

Carol PettipasAt CUA, we pride ourselves on knowing our customers and having customers get to know our staff. We recently sat down with one of our staff members to help you get to know them.

In December 2021, Carol celebrated seven years with CUA. She is currently in the role of Financial Services Representative at our Wyse Road and Pleasant Street Branches.

Where did you grow up, and what brought you here if you moved to the Halifax area?
I grew up in Sarnia, Ontario, but I’ve now lived on the East Coast for more than 40 years. A summer romance brought me to Nova Scotia, and I’ve never looked back! Except for three years spent in Newfoundland, I’ve lived in Halifax and Dartmouth for the entirety.

Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?
I’ve worked in the banking industry for nearly 37 years. Before joining CUA, I worked at one of the big five banks. Also, I have my diploma in Travel and Tourism and have previously worked in a travel agency.

What drew you to banking?
I was drawn to banking because it offered a professional career in customer service with lots of opportunities for training and growth.

Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?
I joined CUA as the Administrative Assistant at the Corporate office and then started as a part-time Financial Services Representative (FSR) at various branches. I recently transitioned to a full-time FSR at the Wyse Road and Pleasant Street branches.

What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
A regular day starts with our pre-opening processes. Once the branch opens, I am helping personal and commercial members with a wide range of over-the-counter banking and connecting them with the right experts to meet their needs.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is working with a great team with the same purpose - to help members solve their financial problems and find ways to make their day-to-day lives more manageable.

Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
The most valuable lesson I have learned is that when faced with a problem, it’s essential to take a holistic approach when finding a solution and think outside the box.

What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice from your financial institution; we are here to help. Everyone faces financial challenges throughout life, whether small or large. You’d be surprised how a short conversation really can make all the difference.

Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
I love spending quality time with family and friends. Since COVID-19, I have become an active “zoomer” and virtually catch up with friends and family. I’m very active, and my favourite activities include biking, running, hiking, skiing and dancing.

Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc.), and if so, what?
I am involved with helping my community church and enjoy participating in or supporting various charity events such as walks and runs for the Lung Association, MS and Run for the Cure.

What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
I love cooking for my family during the holidays, especially turkey dinner. If I’m dining out, I enjoy Greek souvlaki, salad, and roast potatoes
