Environmental Sustainability

Our Commitment

CUA recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability to our members, our employees, to Nova Scotians and those around the globe. We strive to reduce our own environment footprint and inspire others to take action with financial solutions that generate positive change.

Addressing Climate Change

CUA helps to address climate change by focusing our efforts where we can have the widest impact: supporting individuals and organizations to become more energy efficient.

CUA proudly provides flexible, affordable energy-efficient financing for homes and businesses, creating a financial pathway for Nova Scotians to replace their heating system, install solar panels or complete a range of energy efficient upgrades to their home or business. CUA works with dozens of Green Partners and vendors across the Province to provide flexible access to affordable financing solutions. Our goal is to help Nova Scotians use less energy, reduce their impact on the environment, and save money.

CUA continues to welcome additional opportunities to encourage energy efficiency. In 2020, we were proud to support an initiative of Efficiency Canada to encourage the Federal Government to increase its support of energy efficiency measures.

Investing Responsibly

Responsible investing is the process of making investment decisions by conducting both traditional financial analysis of companies and evaluating their performance on environmental, social and governance factors. The responsible investing options we offer help our members achieve their financial goals while making a positive impact on people, companies and the environment.

Supporting Environmental Causes

CUA supports environmental causes and organizations through our Community Impact Plan. In 2020, our Community Investment Grant Program provided direct funding to the Ecology Action Centre’s Bike Again Program, which strives to make it easier for people to take up cycling as active transportation. In past years, CUA has also supported the Friends of the McNabs Island Society in creating an energy efficient and sustainable learning centre, the Halifax Brewery Market in implementing their reusable dishes program and more. Additional recipients can be viewed at cua.com/grants.

Improving Operations

CUA looks for opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint of our day-to-day operations. Staff at all of CUA locations practice efficient use of electricity and water consumption and strive to limit paper use in favour of digital options. When printing is necessary, we have committed to using 100% recycled, FSC-certified paper whenever possible.

CUA’s commitment to sustainable practices continues to evolve. Those we serve shape our values and direction, and if you have feedback on our efforts, we encourage you to reach out to us.
